Early development
Alcan Packaging SINGEN is the first company in the world to produce rigid aluminium foils that are hermetically sealed to uPVC films. The most critical factor for medicinal aluminum foil at the time was allowing oral solid dose tablets to be easily squeezed through the foil.

So for early aluminum foil products, the challenges revolved around developing foils with good tear properties - so that drug tablets could easily "push" out of the foil; and good sealing properties - to achieve the gas needed for product integrity hermetically sealed.

Material properties
The characteristics of aluminum foil for packaging are "hard" or "soft". Soft foils receive additional annealing and any lubricants used during rolling will evaporate.

The application of the protective paint takes place in the first process. Drying (solvent removal) is carried out at high temperature and airflow. The drying heat and airflow also help remove rolling oil from the inside of the material.

Heat seal painting is carried out in the second process. The varnish contains resins that bind the remaining rolling oil and is characterized by good adhesion to the surface. Heat-sealing varnishes are also chosen because of their sensitivity to humidity.

Applications
The development of sealing aluminum foil has evolved into three main forms of blister packaging:

Push-Through (PTP): Used to seal aluminum foil lids to a variety of formable films with the following general structures:
Pre-painted –> Aluminium (hard or soft tempered) –> Heat Seal Coating (HSC)

Peelable: Used to seal foil lids to formable films (usually PVC or PP) with one of the following structures:
Paper –> PET –> Soft Aluminum –> HSC
PET –> Soft Aluminum –> HSC
Paper -> Soft Aluminum -> HSC

Peel/Push: Used to seal foil lids to formable films (usually PVC or PP) with one of the following constructions:
Paper –> PET –> Special Adhesives –> Soft Aluminum –> HSC
PET –> Special Adhesives –> Soft Aluminum –> HSC

Future trends
