Can blister packs be recycled?

As a common packaging material on the market, blister packaging is widely used due to its superior barrier effect and independent packaging. But because blister packs are made of a complex combination of polymeric materials, including metal and plastic, recycling has been controversial. Can blister packs really be recycled?

In early 2021, global biopharmaceutical company Sanofi UK Consumer Healthcare and UK recycling innovator TerraCycle joined forces to launch the Small Package, Big Impact initiative. The program calls on consumers to conveniently recycle their empty over-the-counter and prescription drug blister packs by placing them in dedicated bins at participating local pharmacies.

Here we have to introduce TerraCycle first. TerraCycle is a company dedicated to recycling projects. Unlike common recycling, they develop recycling solutions for waste streams that cannot usually be recycled locally, and propose innovative recycling and solutions for materials.

Blister packaging has always been considered one of the non-recyclable materials because it contains polyvinyl chloride. TerraCycle's recycling method also requires sorting, where the collected blister packs are separated and cleaned by polymer type, and then the material is extruded into plastic pellets to make new recycled products.

In fact, the blister packaging in the pharmaceutical industry proposed to improve the plastic components and use degradable plastics for the production of packaging materials as early as a few years ago. However, due to the high application and manufacturing costs and difficulties in promotion, there has been no Widely used by pharmaceutical companies. This blister packaging recycling program, which emerged in the United Kingdom, has brought new possibilities to the low-carbon emissions of the global pharmaceutical packaging industry.

The safety, stability and shelf life of drugs are crucial to patient health. In order to achieve these goals, pharmaceutical packaging materials must have excellent protective properties. ALU ALU cold forming aluminum packaging is widely used in the global pharmaceutical industry due to its excellent all-round barrier properties and damage resistance. This article will introduce in detail the characteristics, applications and future development direction of ALU ALU cold forming aluminum pharmaceutical packaging materials.
Pharmaceutical packaging materials play a vital role in ensuring drug safety and improving drug effectiveness. Among many packaging materials, PVC and PVDC composite materials are widely used due to their unique barrier properties and physical properties. This article will explore the characteristics, applications and future development trends of PVC/PVDC pharmaceutical packaging materials.
Yangzhou Jerel Pharmaceutical New Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Jerel") will participate in the Pharmaconex Pharmaceutical Exhibition held at the Cairo International Exhibition Center in Egypt from September 8 to 10, 2024. As a leading global supplier of pharmaceutical packaging materials, JEREL will showcase its latest products and technologies at this exhibition to provide high-quality pharmaceutical packaging solutions for customers around the world.
In the pharmaceutical industry chain, pharmaceutical packaging material companies are often regarded as "behind-the-scenes heroes", but whether they should be classified as pharmaceutical companies has sparked widespread discussion. Pharmaceutical packaging materials play a vital role in ensuring the safety, effectiveness and quality of drugs. Therefore, more and more voices believe that these companies should be included in the category of pharmaceutical companies.
As consumers pay more and more attention to health and safety, packaging materials for drugs and foods have become the focus of public attention. However, although there are similarities between drug and food packaging materials in some aspects, the differences between them are crucial, especially in material selection, performance requirements and regulatory standards.
In the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical packaging materials serve as important barriers to protect drug quality and ensure patient safety. The quality and performance of these materials directly affect the stability and effectiveness of drugs. With the continuous advancement of medical technology and increasing demands for drug safety from patients, stricter and more comprehensive requirements have been proposed for the inspection standards of pharmaceutical packaging materials. Pharmaceutical aluminum foil, as a high-quality material widely used in drug packaging, plays an irreplaceable role in ensuring drug quality due to its unique barrier properties, corrosion resistance, and heat-sealing performance. This article aims to explore the inspection standards of pharmaceutical packaging materials, using pharmaceutical aluminum foil as an example, and elaborates on specific requirements in terms of physical properties, microbial contamination, heat-sealing performance, and others.
With the advancement of technology and the diversification of consumer demands, the markets for dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals are flourishing. Their packaging serves as the "first impression" of the products, carrying not only the basic functions of protecting and facilitating portability but also serving as a crucial medium for conveying product information, shaping brand image, and safeguarding consumer rights. Starting from the nature of dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals, we can delve deeper into analyzing the differences in their packaging.
Medications are essential in our daily lives, and their quality and safety often depend on the packaging materials used. Pharmaceutical cold aluminum foil, a new type of drug packaging material, offers unique advantages for efficiently storing medications, making it an ideal choice for long-term preservation. Traditional drug packaging materials, such as plastic bottles, typically only meet basic packaging needs and pose several issues regarding drug safety and shelf life. The advent of pharmaceutical cold aluminum foil provides a new solution in the pharmaceutical packaging field, leading to widespread application. The advantages of pharmaceutical cold aluminum foil are mainly reflected in the following four aspects.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a synthetic plastic made from vinyl chloride monomers through polymerization reactions. It is the third largest synthetic polymer plastic in the world (after polyethylene and polypropylene) and can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. PVC gradually became an important material in various fields. Among them, medicinal PVC hard sheets are a common pharmaceutical packaging material, with good sealing, moisture resistance, and corrosion resistance.
The importance of pharmaceutical packaging materials in the pharmaceutical packaging market is undeniable. Pharmaceutical packaging plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of pharmaceutical products. The packaging market in the pharmaceutical industry is continuously evolving to meet the changing needs and regulations.
The pharmaceutical packaging materials play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and safety of drugs, among which pharmaceutical aluminum foil, as a widely used packaging material, has numerous remarkable characteristics and advantages. It possesses good moisture resistance, airtightness, and sealability.
In the field of medicine, blister packs are a common form of drug packaging. However, have you noticed that some blister packs have an additional protective layer? This protective layer is usually made of tropical aluminum, and its presence is not accidental but holds significant importance and value.
